Llamas, alpagas and vicunas are all part of the camelid family but they all have different characteristics. The vicuna is a wild animal and a protected specie. We saw a lot of them in Patagonia and also in the Andes, but it is relly hard to get close to them because they are scared easily. The vicuna is really elegant with its big black eyes and its long thin legs. On the contrary, the llama is a tamed animal (this from far before the pre-inca period), essentially lives int the Andes (at more than 4500 metres under the sea level), is used to transport goods and is tamed for its wool and meat (you definitaley need to taste the llama stew, it is really good!). Physically its legs are much shorter than the vicunas', has much more wool and looks disdainful (indeed it is better not to bother him because if it spits it never misses its target!). The alpaga is very much alike the llama but smaller and its wool is much softer.
