Our favorite! Choquequiraw or "the other Machu Picchu" is the name given to this great site. Located at 3100 meters above sea level, on top of the mountain and above the steep gorge of the Apurimac River. Choquequiraw is surrounded by snowy peaks and dense green forests cover the valley. No road leads there therefore the only way is to walk. The trekking usually takes 4 days through steep slopes. We start in Cachora at 2500 m altitude and then the road descends to the river at 1500 meters and goes up again over 3000 m. We did the walk in three days, walking nearly 70 km and 10 hours the last day! To reach this great Inca sanctuary hidden in the heart of the Andes is worth making the effort. The site is amazing and the difficulty to access it gives the impression that we owe it a little more. Few people go there which makes the visit very intimate.

CHOQUEQUIRAO
Photos/Fotos/Pictures
